A founder answers

How do you balance grinding on a startup with enjoying your 20s?

Hamish admits it's probably not super balanced, and he balances it by way of acceptance. He decided at 20 that he wanted this by the time he was 25, reverse engineered what he'd need to do, and framed it as "what if I just slam life hard for five years" and then have the rest of his life for a deep imbalance toward the things that give him the most joy.

Last year he was averaging 30 hours a week on work meetings and working from 7 to 11 or 7 to midnight every day, including weekends. Now he has 10 hours of meetings a week because he's got a team, still works 7 to 11 but knocks off at 5 on Friday and doesn't work weekends. He calls building a company a very selfish endeavour, where even when he's out, the majority of the time he's still thinking about work and not present.
