How does Known onboard new users?

Known runs an in-depth onboarding conversation — often by voice — that starts by asking you about "the first chapter of your life," then follow-ups about childhood, college, career, how friends would describe you, and whether you "work to live or live to work."

Celeste says the first question is usually along the lines of "hi Celeste, you joined known because swiping just isn't cutting anymore, so we're gonna do this differently — I'd love to hear where you grew up and how you ended up living in San Francisco." From there Known asks follow-up questions about your childhood, where you went to college "if you did go," your career, "how your friends would describe you," and "what you do in your spare time," trying to understand "whether you're an introvert or an extrovert" and "whether you work to live or live to work."

She is careful that the questions aren't "fully the secret sauce" — it is also "what we learn about you over time from continuous conversation." Doing onboarding through voice lets Known use "inference into people's speech patterns" to understand "not just what they're saying but how they're saying it," while staying "completely compliant with all biometric data laws."
